FuT – Fuselage Trainer

By MWO Mark Ezard, CC130J ORM Loadmaster SME

As part of OTSP (Operational Training Systems Provider) program to provide a comprehensive CC130J Aircrew Training capability, acceptance testing continues between Cascade Aerospace in Abbotsford and RCAF on one of the main training devices.  This testing, FCA (Functional Configuration Audit), was performed on the FuT (Fuselage Trainer) which is a fully functional fuselage of a CC130J Hercules to provide initial Loadmaster training to students in a simulated environment at the AMTC (Air Mobility Training Centre) located at 8 Wing Trenton.

The FuT is an exact replica of a CC130J Hercules fuselage that will enable a Loadmaster student to perform his/her training in a simulated environment through software, and actual manipulation of control panels, intercom, lighting, cargo restraint, loading/offloading related to becoming an operational aircrew member aboard the aircraft.  The recent FCA was in final preparations for transport of the FuT to the AMTC beginning of May 2012 and is a cooperative requirement of CAE, 426 Sqn and the PMO ACP-T.

Shown below are the Loadmasters (current, retired, and legacy), involved with the FuT Acceptance Testing:  Sgt Dave Bickford, WO Don MacLean, James Jeckell, and MWO Mark Ezard.

Air movements unit commemorated at Montreal airport

By Capt Todd Curtis

Representatives of 2 Air Movements Squadron, from 8 Wing Trenton, Ont., and the Montreal-Trudeau Airport recently commemorated the 60th anniversary of the formation of 2 Air Movements Unit.

The airport, formerly known as the Montreal-Dorval Airport, grew out of Royal Canadian Air Force Station Lachine, which was established at Dorval, Que., in 1941 as a transit point for moving aircraft and supplies to Europe during the Second World War.

No. 2 Air Movement Unit (2 AMU) was formed at RCAF Lachine in 1951 to support 426 Transport Squadron and 436 Transport Squadron, which had been re-established there in the late 1940s. During the time it was located in Montreal, 2 AMU played a role in many operations including the Korean War, northern resupply and the Suez Crisis.

The unit, today known as 2 Air Movements Squadron, moved to Trenton, Ont., in 1959 and is an integral part of 8 Wing Trenton.

“The Greater Montréal Area specifically played an important role in the industrial production, training and employment of transport aircraft and assets in areas such as Lachine and Dorval,” said squadron commanding officer, Major Ken Mills, during the dedication of a commemorative plaque on Jan. 18 at the airport.

Maj Mills, Chief Warrant Officer Gilda Dolph (squadron CWO), and squadron Honorary Colonel Eben James were joined at the commemoration by squadron members, members of the air movements community and airport staff, as well as former Chief of the Air Staff, Lieutenant-General (ret’d) Angus Watt, now the President and CEO of the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA).

The plaque was unveiled in the passenger reception area of the main terminal and will be displayed in conjunction with the airport’s 70th anniversary displays, ensuring a marked level of visibility for persons travelling in and out of Montreal for all purposes.

Maj Ken Mills (left) and Mr. Pierre-Paul Pharand, Vice-President, Airport Operations and Air Services Development for Montreal-Trudeau Airport, stand beside the plaque commemorating the establishment of 2 Air Movements Unit.

The plaque reads as follows:

2 Air Movements Squadron

Responsible for passenger and freight handling on military aircraft, 2 Air Movements Unit was formed on April 1, 1951 from a detachment of 901 Air Traffic Handling Unit at RCAF Station Lachine (now Montréal-Trudeau Airport).
